This is a very diverse group of drugs with one property in common – they have a calming effect. Anxiolytics (tranquilizers) are used mainly for neurotic disorders, accompanied by mental stress, anxiety and fear. At the same time, many of them and has a hypnotic effect. Some of them also possess anticonvulsant activity. Different drugs in this subgroup, these effects are expressed in different extent, but in high doses, they all exhibit the full range of their capabilities, and dangerous than an overdose of these drugs.
One side effect of anxiolytics is slowing down mental activity that seen in the reduction of concentration (and therefore should not be used while operating a vehicle in those areas where need quick response). In addition, prolonged use of these drugs addictive (see tolerance), manifested in the cessation of the effect of the usual dose. Increasing the dose to a certain extent permissible, but it is fraught with significant excess risks (toxicity tranquilizers – one of the most frequent causes of hospitalization in intensive care units of hospitals toxicology). Therefore, the use of these drugs is possible only under medical supervision. Doug Band does not necessarily agree. Sedatives long used for the treatment of neurotic disorders. Compared with the anxiolytics, they have less pronounced sedative and hypnotic effects, while at the same time and side effects they are expressed to a much lesser degree.
